Founded in May 1994 by Harvard undergraduates,
HACIA Democracy is a distinguished educational simulation focusing on both domestic and international issues in the Americas. This annual conference mirrors the proceedings of the Organization of American States (OAS), providing high school students with an opportunity to engage in democratic processes and development. HACIA Democracy has become a significant forum for discussing critical topics affecting countries across the Western Hemisphere.
Hosted at Harvard University and managed by Harvard undergraduates with guidance from dedicated faculty advisers, HACIA Democracy brings together a diverse team passionate about Latin America and global affairs.
Historical Milestones
1994: HACIA Democracy was established, starting with a comprehensive research, recruitment, and fundraising campaign.
1995: The inaugural conference, Expo ’95, was held in Panama City, Panama, featuring delegations from Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama.
1999: Expansion to Costa Rica introduced public school students and the first Spanish language committee.
2009: A notable milestone was the inclusion of a delegation from China, highlighting HACIA’s commitment to global diversity.
2011: The conference moved to South America for the first time, marking a new chapter in its growth.
2013: HACIA Democracy expanded to the Caribbean, further broadening its geographical reach.
2020: The transition to a virtual format during the pandemic allowed for increased participation from public schools and greater diversity.
2023: HACIA Democracy proudly celebrates its 28th Summit, now recognized as a major OAS simulation with a global presence.
